O presidente dos Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, falou pela primeira vez sobre os atentados suicidas que mataram pelo menos 60 civis afegãos e 12 militares americanos nos arredores do aeroporto de Cabul, capital do Afeganistão, em pronunciamento feito na Casa Branca na noite desta quinta-feira. Biden prometeu resposta aos ataques, que ele confirmou terem sido realizados pelo Estado Islâmico, e disse que todos os americanos que ainda estão no Afeganistão serão retirados do país.
“Para aqueles que realizaram esse ataque e também para qualquer um que deseje o mal para a América, saibam disso: Nós não perdoaremos. Nós não esqueceremos. Nós caçaremos vocês e vamos fazê-los pagar”, declarou. “Eu defenderei nossos interesses e nosso povo com cada medida que esteja sob meu comando”.
O presidente americano revelou que pediu aos comandantes das forças armadas dos EUA uma resposta contra alvos do EI.
“Eu também pedi aos meus comandantes que elaborem planos operacionais para atacar unidades, ativos e lideranças cruciais do Estado Islâmico. Responderemos com força e precisão no momento e local de nossa escolha”, afirmou.
Biden fez uma homenagem aos militares mortos nos atentados. “Esses membros do serviço americano que deram as suas vidas foram heróis. Heróis que se engajaram em uma perigosa missão altruísta para salvar a vida de outros”, disse o democrata. “Eles faziam parte de uma operação de resgate como nenhuma outra já vista na história”.
Dirigindo-se aos familiares dos soldados e afegãos mortos, Biden disse que ele e sua esposa, Jill Biden, sofrem com aqueles que perderam entes queridos. “Temos alguma noção sobre o que as famílias desses bravos heróis estão sentindo hoje. A sensação é de estar sendo sugado para um buraco negro no meio do seu peito, sem saída”.
Mais uma vez, o presidente americano defendeu a sua decisão de retirar as tropas do país asiático. “Era o momento de encerrar uma guerra de 20 anos”, declarou. Ele disse que nunca concordou que o seu país deveria “sacrificar vidas americanas para tentar estabelecer um governo democrático” no Afeganistão, e que o interesse dos EUA era impedir o ressurgimento da Al Qaeda. Para o mandatário, os EUA enfrentam ameaças maiores vindas de outros, e mais próximos, países.
Biden passou a tarde de hoje na Sala de Crise da Casa Branca, recebendo atualizações constantes da equipe de segurança nacional sobre a situação em Cabul.
Como foram os ataques
Duas explosões foram causadas na tarde desta quinta-feira em atentados suicidas que mataram dezenas de afegãos e pelo menos 12 militares americanos, nos arredores do aeroporto de Cabul, em uma área onde têm se concentrado milhares de pessoas que buscam fugir do país após a tomada do poder pelo Talibã.
Os ataques foram reivindicados pelo braço do Estado Islâmico no Afeganistão, o Estado Islâmico de Khorasan (EI-K).
Durante a tarde, o secretário de Defesa americano, Lloyd Austin, indicou que a operação de resgate de milhares de cidadãos irá continuar, apesar dos atos de terrorismo desta tarde.
