Conhecidos por serem relativamente baratos e suficientemente populares entre empresários e profissionais da área de inovação, os hackathons e programas de aceleração de startups estão deixando de ser uma das principais fontes da busca por soluções tecnológicas entre grandes empresas. Apesar de contribuírem com o amadurecimento do processo de inovação corporativa e conectar as empresas do ecossistema de inovação, outros modelos estão sendo muito mais efetivos na geração de valor para acionistas de empresas, nacionais e multinacionais.
Principalmente desde o início da pandemia, soluções como o Corporate Venture Building (CVB) vêm ganhando cada vez mais espaço entre as empresas, uma vez que endereçam de forma mais estratégica os desafios da inovação, geração de valor e retorno sobre o investimento para os acionistas, papel diferente do que a contribuição mais relacionada a sensibilização e ideação que são entregues pelos chamados hackathons. A modalidade, ainda pouco disseminada por aqui, é importada dos Estados Unidos e da Europa, onde já é largamente usada pelas corporações. A The Bakery, empresa global de inovação corporativa fundada em Londres e com escritório no Brasil (que atende empresas como Vale, Natura, Santander e Fleury), é uma das maiores referências desse assunto dentro do mercado de consultorias e vem percebendo um forte aumento da demanda por parte das corporações brasileiras.
O CVB é um dos melhores modelos da atualidade para as grandes empresas que decidiram desenvolver startups a partir de ideias. Neste caso, a nova empresa é mantida completamente apartada da estrutura da companhia “mãe”, e tem como premissa atuar dentro da cadeia de valor da empresa patrocinadora. A The Bakery explica que as startups também podem ter o propósito de ser uma porta de entrada exploratória de tecnologias e modelos de negócio inovadores, complementares ou disruptivos, podendo também fornecer soluções para clientes e concorrentes.
“Os hackathons são relativamente baratos, engajam pontualmente a comunidade empreendedora, mas em geral não resolvem a vida das companhias patrocinadoras. O Corporate Venture Building exige um investimento mais alto e, em contrapartida, gera eficiência muito relevante no processo, no tempo de execução e no retorno do investimento, resultando numa melhor relação de custo-benefício, além de atender a direcionamentos estratégicos na construção de valor e novos negócios no médio e longo prazos”, afirma Rodrigo de Alvarenga, Head de Corporate Venture Building e Corporate Venture Capital na The Bakery.
“Grandes empresas como Natura e Vale, têm percebido que a criação de startups independentes, com o potencial de resolver os problemas de uma parte da cadeia, ou mesmo de negócios que não são diretamente ligados ao seu core business, podem gerar resultados melhores e trazer mais valor no médio e longo prazos”, diz o executivo.
Um exemplo de Corporate Venture Building é o Zé Delivery, aplicativo de entrega de bebidas criado pela Ambev, em 2016. Durante a pandemia, enquanto a Ambev sofreu com a expansão da concorrência, em um mercado com demanda estável, o aplicativo mais que dobrou de tamanho. Segundo dados levantados pelo JP Morgan em outubro de 2020, o Zé Delivery foi baixado 3,3 milhões de vezes ao longo de dez meses do ano passado, ante 1,47 milhão durante todo 2019.
Produção industrial de startups
No mundo, enquanto a taxa de mortalidade de uma startup flutua acima de 90%, as melhores venture builders podem reduzir esse risco significativamente, além de reduzir a exposição das corporates aos riscos de branding, entre outros, inerentes ao processo de lançamento de novas startups, preservando o caráter empreendedor, o uso de metodologias ágeis e mais modernas, bem como a liberdade necessária para os processos de ideação, validação e lançamento. Responsável por importantes iniciativas do gênero no Brasil, a The Bakery produz startups customizadas, processo no qual empresas inovadoras são prototipadas, testadas e lançadas sob medida para os clientes.
“Somos para as grandes corporações o que as aceleradoras são para as startups. Com isso, usamos menos dinheiro do caixa das empresas no médio e longo prazos”, explica Rodrigo.
Advindo do “Startup as a Service”, como foi batizado internamente, o programa tem acompanhado os anseios do mercado. “O mercado está aquecido. Já falávamos sobre o Corporate Venture Building com nossos clientes mas, de uns quatro meses para cá, observamos um crescimento de 50% na demanda pelo CVB e tivemos um aumento significativo dos projetos em negociação e estruturação”, conta Felipe Novaes, sócio e cofundador da The Bakery no Brasil.
Na opinião de Felipe, as grandes empresas entendem que, apesar de conhecerem como ninguém o mercado que geralmente lideram, gerenciar a concepção e o lançamento de uma startup foge do escopo e da competência de suas equipes. “O cliente nos procura porque entende que, internamente, esse processo sofre com burocracia, depende das horas de trabalho de muitos times, e o que poderia ser feito em um mês acaba demorando seis meses”, afirma.
O investimento em soluções complementares ou concorrentes é outro ponto que tem amadurecido entre as empresas brasileiras, segundo o cofundador da The Bakery: “Antigamente, as grandes dominavam mercados mesmo com algumas falhas de operação. Com a tecnologia, isso tem mudado cada vez mais rapidamente. Existem startups ganhando escala e faturando milhões em cima de brechas bem específicas, então, por que não olhar para dentro de casa e rever esse preconceito?”
