“O Cristianismo é a religião das religiões porque, em sua plenitude, esclarece e revela a natureza, a essência peculiar, de todo sistema religioso” (M. Bakunin)
O sentido usual da palavra “religião”, compreendida como esfera autônoma em relação a outros domínios (política, ciência, economia etc.), e sobretudo como questão de escolha individual e privada, tem origem cristã. Encontramo-lo, por exemplo, num dos mais antigos e originais documentos de apologética cristã, a Epístola a Diogneto, texto de autoria desconhecida, provavelmente endereçado ao imperador Adriano, arconte de Atenas por volta do ano 120 d.C., que demonstrara curiosidade crescente pela maneira com que os cristãos aparentavam desprezar o mundo, não temer a morte e os deuses pagãos. Em atenção à perplexidade de Adriano, o cristão anônimo autor da epístola descreve a própria religião nos seguintes termos:
“Os cristãos, de fato, não se distinguem dos outros homens, nem por sua terra, nem por sua língua ou costumes. Com efeito, não moram em cidades próprias, nem falam língua estranha, nem têm algum modo especial de viver. Sua doutrina não foi inventada por eles, graças ao talento e a especulação de homens curiosos, nem professam, como outros, algum ensinamento humano. Pelo contrário, vivendo em casas gregas e bárbaras, conforme a sorte de cada um, e adaptando-se aos costumes do lugar quanto à roupa, ao alimento e ao resto, testemunham um modo de vida admirável e, sem dúvida, paradoxal. Vivem na sua pátria, mas como forasteiros; participam de tudo como cristãos e suportam tudo como estrangeiros. Toda pátria estrangeira é pátria deles, e cada pátria é estrangeira. Casam-se como todos e geram filhos, mas não abandonam os recém-nascidos. Põem a mesa em comum, mas não o leito; estão na carne, mas não vivem segundo a carne; moram na terra, mas têm sua cidadania no céu; obedecem às leis estabelecidas, mas com sua vida ultrapassam as leis”.
A ideia de “ultrapassar as leis” seria absolutamente impensável no universo religioso greco-romano, como também nas demais religiões abrâamicas, mais baseadas na lei do que na fé. Temos aí sistemas religiosos totais, nos quais a lei transcendente se aplica a todos os aspectos do mundo dos homens, tanto ao nível individual quanto ao coletivo. Incide sobre a vida privada e familiar, sobre a prece, sobre os rituais, sobre as normas de etiqueta, sobre os negócios, sobre a legislação, sobre a política, sobre as práticas sanitárias e alimentares, e assim por diante. Não há, pois, como falar em “religião” nesse contexto, precisamente porque não há nada que se lhe escape. Se tudo aí é religião, o próprio termo perde o sentido.
Sobre o contexto muçulmano, por exemplo, Bernard Lewis explica em A linguagem política do Islã (1988): “Quando nós, no Ocidente, usamos as palavras ‘Islã’ e ‘islâmico’, tendemos a cometer um erro natural, pressupondo que religião tem para os muçulmanos o mesmo sentido que para o mundo ocidental, a saber: um compartimento da vida reservado a certas questões, separado, ou ao menos separável, de outros compartimentos equivalentes. Não é assim que funciona no islamismo… A distinção entre igreja e Estado, tão profundamente enraizada na cristandade, simplesmente não existe no Islã. No árabe clássico, bem como em outros idiomas que dele herdaram o seu vocabulário político e intelectual, não há um par de termos que corresponda a espiritual e temporal, leigo e eclesiástico, ou religioso e secular… Não há aí algum equivalente à palavra laicidade, uma expressão sem sentido no contexto islâmico”.
No Cristianismo, com efeito, a esfera religiosa está, desde o início, conceitualmente apartada da sociedade dos homens e da vida terrena. Ao contrário de judeus e muçulmanos, os cristãos – como diz a epístola – não se distinguem por sua terra, língua ou costumes, adaptando-se facilmente a qualquer cultura e organização social. A unidade do Cristianismo se dá exclusivamente noutro plano, autônomo e transcendente em relação à existência mundana, e que, por isso mesmo, pode ser propriamente definido como religioso.
